Optical network problems are primarily caused by dirt particles trapped between two fiber end faces that will significantly degrade the optical signal. A particle that partially or completely blocks the core generates strong back reflections, which can cause instability in a laser system. One of the most basic, yet important maintenance procedures is to inspect and clean connector end faces.
