Vibration-proof connectors - on water, land and space
High-quality connectors, ideal for aerospace and sensor applications
Losone (CH) - Fiber optics offer many advantages to conventional electronic systems: large bandwidth capacity, low energy consumption and low energy dissipation, simple architecture for data buses as well as immunity to electromagnetic fields. They are extremely robust and stand out with their small physical size and lightweight. Sometimes, a harsh environment can make the use of glass fibers nearly impossible. For these demanding applications, the Swiss company DIAMOND SA has developed the vibration-proof AVIM™ connector family.
In the nineties, DIAMOND developed the AVIM™ connector based on a request for special avionic applications. The standard DIN-connector of those days was unsuitable for use in aviation and aerospace applications because of vibrations during operation. The AVIM™ connector was able to cope with this challenge. As a result, its rugged lightweight version, the Mini AVIM™, made it on the EXOMARS-Rover.
For many years now, the Mini AVIM™ connector is used in a variety of avionic and sensor applications. It provides exceptional environmental resistance combined with the outstanding optical performance of DIAMOND’s unique ferrule design and Active Core Alignment (ACA) technology. The new Micro AVIM™ and Midi AVIM™ have recently been added to the connector family to provide solutions to applications not covered by the already existing products. The typical environmental conditions where these Diamond SA products are used are on water, on land and in space.
Today, fiber optic sensors are also used to detect material fatigue in infrastructures that are subjected to vibrations and corrosion environment such as bridges. Criteria such as elongation, vibration, inclination, humidity, pH value, temperature, load weight and others can be recorded with these detection systems. The AVIM™ and Midi AVIM™ connectors are the first choice for this kind of applications.
Safety monitoring represents another vast deployment area for fiber optics. Passive sonar systems (e.g. towed or sea-bottom sonar) equipped with opto-acoustic hydrophones are used to monitor ship movements at crucial points in harbors and rivers. Good environmental resistant connectors allowing for the best (high-end) optical performance are particularly important for these passive systems using sensitive analog signals – after all, it is not the aim to detect changes within the fiber-optic connection but the changing environmental conditions. To avoid potential sources of errors, secure and high performance fiber optic connections are required. DIAMOND’s outstanding AVIM™<s>-</s>family fulfills all these requirements.
We look forward to discussing your application with you.
